In March 1940, a journey taken by John Steinbeck and his friend, marine biologist Ed Ricketts, down the coast of California, expanded from a trip meant to document the creatures that inhabit the shallow water and tide pools on the margins of the Sea of Cortez into a large philosophical exploration of mankind's relationship to the natural world. This documentary considers how that journey can inspire similar contemporary philosophical explorations.
